Many car makers are now fitting run-flat tyres as original equipment. These have either a reinforced sidewall or additional internal structure to provide partial support to the tyre in a deflated condition. Ride quality on a deflated run-flat tyre will be similar to normal. The driver may not be able to tell that a puncture has happened, particularly if driving on the motorway. For this reason run-flat tyres will always be fitted together with a tyre pressure monitoring system TPMS.
By Rob Hull For Thisismoney. An AA tyre technician's trip to pick up an online purchase on his day off may have saved the life of the man he was collecting from when he spotted his dangerous tyres. The off-duty mechanic spotted the nearly-new plate car on the driveway was fitted with rubber that was 23 years old. The combined age of all four tyres on the three-year-old car - believed to be fitted by the used car dealership that sold the unsuspecting owner the vehicle - was a staggering 64 years - older than the owner himself.
AA Tyres MD Mark Shankland pictured with the year old tyre one of his technicans found fitted to a car when he went to a man's house to collect an online purchase. Dave Jones, a technician for AA Tyres, may have been out of hours, but was eagle-eyed enough to spot the four extremely dated and miss-matched tyres fitted to the vehicle. On arrival at the house of the man he'd bought an online purchase from, Mr Jones - a connoisseur of Continental tyres with more than 20 years of experience as a technician for the breakdown group - recognised that the nearside rear wheel had a tread pattern that had been discontinued for many years.
When he scrutinised the weathered rubber in detail, he then saw it had a three digit number on the sidewall, indicating that the tyre was manufactured before The three numbers read ''. Translated from tyre language that means the rubber was produced in the eighth week of , which makes them a year older than pop singer Justin Bieber. A full inspection of the remaining three corners of the vehicle revealed the other rear tyre dated back to while the two fronts were also a decade old.
When he notified the shocked car owner, Mr Jones was told that the car had only been bought from a used car dealership a few weeks before and that the driver was completely unaware of the age of the tyres. Mr Jones said: You could also see that they were dull and perished — showing how old they were. The Pirelli tyre is clearly stamped with the '' mark, which means it was made in the eighth week of The tyre also had two repair attempts carried out on it, both of which Mr Jones said were dangerously poor efforts to save the damaged rubber.
Somebody had clearly tried to make two repairs to it too — which had been done in a dangerous and pretty hamfisted manner. The car owner, who asked to remain anonymous, didn't seek compensation from the dealership that fitted the ageing rubber, but was quick to have all four tyres replaced. He said: MD at AA Tyres, Mark Shankland, said, while there is no hard and fast rules about when you should change your tyres, it's a case of 'common sense prevailing'.
He told us: And remember, part worn tyres are always going to be part safe. After all, they came off another car for a reason. Every tyre is date stamped with a four-digit code since — three if it was made pre The first two digits refer to the week and the second two indicate the year — so a tyre marked was made in the twentieth week of Check your tyre pressure — it may sound obvious, but poorly inflated tyres can slash fuel economy and cut tyre life.
Assess the condition of the tyres — look out for sidewalls cracking, cuts in the tread and whether they seem soft or under inflated. Make sure you have the same size tyre on both sides of the same axle. The views expressed in the contents above are those of our users and do not necessarily reflect the views of MailOnline. One in five British motorists has bought second-hand tyres , and one in eight plans to do so again, despite repeated warnings about their safety. Just 10 percent of drivers said they would never buy part-worn rubber for their vehicles, but a third 33 percent of respondents said they either believed part-worn tyres represented better value than new ones, or they were unsure as to which were the best value for money. James Fairclough, the CEO of AA Cars, said drivers should be aware of the dangers posed by part-worn tyres and the misconceptions surrounding them. And Fairclough also pointed out the dangers of failing to check the tyres when buying a second-hand car. While some of these tyre deformities can be spotted straightaway, for extra peace of mind it might be worth considering a pre-sale vehicle inspection since not all issues are immediately apparent. Home News Safety. One in eight drivers would buy 'safety risk' part-worn tyres.

They only come out if you first buy the tyres from the AA - but at what price? They won t fit the tyre if you supply it yourself of course they don t say this on their website. Basically, a complete waste of time and space. Go elsewhere. Definately go RAC next year what a waste of money.
I have heard that the AA and other breakdown cover providers will not use tyre sealant if you call them out to fix a puncture. Is this true?
